CHINA'S PAIN INDIA'S GAIN
NOV 2017  |   Vol. VI  |  Issue #5

WHO WILL COVER CHINA'S STEEL EXPORT LOSS?

The Chinese steel industry, which has been seen as the predominant exporter of steel have registered a consecutive fall in exports. China exported around 5.1 million metric tons of steel products in September, which is 41.5% lower than in September 2016. Chinese steel exports are currently down to less than half of peak values. This means importing countries have to either start their own steel melting or have to import steel from other countries like Japan, Korea, Russia and India. Can any of these countries be able to cover up China's loss?

It is expected that exports from China will continue to fall in coming months as production cuts intensifies in key steel producing regions in China. The structure of the Chinese steel sector has changed fundamentally; the exports of steel product have fallen sharply in this year. Closures in the Chinese steel sector have fundamentally changed the structure of the industry and this situation will benefit steelmakers everywhere.

Steel360 in the cover story finds the answers to the China's steel exports decline, can India fill that gap? How India can play a major role in fulfilling China's loss; has India's export graph improved? Read the analysis on page 32.
