Pandemic weighs on metals recycling impacts pricing

India’s pandemic-ravaged ferrous metals recycling industry is trying its best to emerge fit after a therapeutic bout of government sops in the form of detention charges waiver at ports during the lockdown. The important factor till the end of the current fiscal would be the expected second wave of COVID-19. Some countries in Europe have already announced one-month lockdowns. If more follow suit to control the pandemic then demand and prices both can be impacted. As it is, there is a scarcity in global scrap supplies due to lower production, factors which are keeping prices firm. Our Cover Story, on pg.30, unravels the scrap industry through the eyes of three industry veterans – Yogesh Bedi, Chief, Steel Recycling Business, Tata Steel; Sanjay Mehta, Director, MTC Business & President, MRAI; & Raj S. Vaidhyanathan, Group Director (Commercial), Indicaa Group, Dubai.

Intervista, on pg.49, zeroes in on M.C. Thomas, Managing Director, Tata Steel Mining Limited (TSML), who dwells on the company’s growth plans along with the emerging ferro chrome scenario in India and globally.

Our Product section, on pg.43, throws the spotlight on the around 22-MnT pipes & tubes industry which is betting big on city gas and water distribution projects and rural demand.

Coal360, on pg.22, unravels how pent-up demand from steel mills has helped met coke prices to regain lost ground, and on pg.24, traces the strides Coal India is taking towards mechanised coal transportation.

Plus, we focus on a lot more. Enjoy the read!

Steel360 wishes its readers a Happy Diwali.
